Concrete slab calculator: yards, bags, rebar and cost

Concrete is the one material you cannot top up an hour later. Under-order and you get a cold joint; over-order and you pay for a partial load you have nowhere to put. Getting the volume and the waste factor right is the whole job of a slab estimate.

Enter slab dimensions and thickness and the takeoff returns cubic yards and bag equivalents, base gravel, vapor barrier, reinforcement with chairs, and a control-joint spacing suggestion, all priced against regional material indexes.

Estimates only — not a quote.

What you get

Included in the takeoff

  • Cubic yards and bag-count equivalents with waste
  • Base gravel volume and vapor barrier area
  • Rebar grid or mesh sheets, plus chairs
  • Form lumber and stakes
  • Control-joint spacing guidance
What it asks for

Inputs

  • Slab length, width and thickness
  • Thickened edges or footings
  • Reinforcement type and grid spacing
  • Base depth and finish type
How to plan it

Plan it in 5 steps

  1. 1
    Measure and set thickness

Thickness drives both volume and reinforcement. Pick it for the load the slab will carry, not for the cheapest number.

  2. 2
    Account for the base

Compacted base gravel is part of the excavation depth. Include it before you calculate how much you are digging out.

  3. 3
    Choose reinforcement

The takeoff turns your grid spacing into rebar length or mesh sheets, plus the chairs that hold steel mid-slab where it actually works.

  4. 4
    Plan control joints

A common guide is joint spacing in feet no more than two to three times slab thickness in inches. Your plan lists the spacing used.

  5. 5
    Order with a waste factor

Subgrade variation eats concrete. Keep a waste allowance and confirm truck minimums with your supplier.

Planning guidance only. Every quantity and price is an estimate — confirm dimensions and local requirements before you buy or build.
